 I'll be concise January 6, 2009
Here's the deal this book is at best worth a 2-1/2 star rating. The writing is simple but not captivating. Don't expect to be drawn in by any amazing character development in this sci-fi adventure novel. There are no real original twists or turns. I feel overall this story is nothing new for the sci-fi world. Those of you giving this book 4-5 stars could only hold this book to such high esteem due to its star wars roots. If this were a book not titled star wars the rating would be much lower trust me.
Final thoughts: If you're a star wars fan you'll enjoy this one especially if you're a less mature reader. If you're looking for a good Star wars book check out anything written by Timothy Zahn (the man an artist to say the least). If your not a star wars fan forget about this one I know I will.

 not a con novel, it's for real [no spoilers] August 5, 2008
"The Paradise Snare" begins "The Han Solo Trilogy" with 19 year old Han conning and scheming to survive. The initial installment covers only the early life of Han Solo without any galaxy saving plots (so far) unlike the few other Star Wars novels I have read. The writing sufficiently entertains as a youthful and idealistic Han struggles to learn more about his past and establish himself in desperate times.
One of Han's travelling companions Muuurgh, a felinoid Togorian, is reminiscent of Chewbacca the Wookiee in loyalty and temperament which reveals the trend in partners stemming from his roguish background. A small part of Han's lineage reveals interesting possibilities, how he could embrace a brilliant life or journey through a dark era. However a slave Corellian girl attracts Solo's attention during his adventures, leading him onto the path of decency. Regardless, his quick wit, piloting experience, and sharp shooting develop while he's a fledgling smuggler.
A comprehensive appendix would have been useful.

 Boring & Predictable = Disappointing May 5, 2008
I'd read a lot of praise for this Han Solo trilogy online so I was very excited when my library finally had it in. I wound up very disappointed. Throughout the entire book I was always waiting for it to 'pick up' and 'get good'. It felt long with a lot of sitting around & talking. Crispin wasn't keeping me interested with fascinating description or great writing style either. Maybe Han's love interest with that girl was supposed to keep me entertained (yawn).
I thought Han's childhood was silly. Did someone mention Oliver Twist? There was a lot of lovey-dovey stuff between Han & his new girlfriend but it wasn't what I came to see! The story was very predictable, with an emphasis of very. I'd recommend this book for pre-teens or young teenagers.
I wanted to like this book. I really did. I still want to like this book. It's got a great cover after all! I'm sad to say I wont be reading the next two in this series...

This book is the first of a trilogy about Han Solo prior to where we meet him in the Star Wars movies. It explores Han Solo's childhood/teen years and the later books in the trilogy lead in to how he met Chewbacca, Lando, and started working for Jabba the Hutt. Definitely recommend this.
