Hey now! Now that even Green Acres has its own boxed set, it's time for the The Larry Sanders Show to hit DVD! Join Larry and his guests Carol Burnett, Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, Peter Falk, Mimi Rogers, Billy Crystal, Catherine O'Hara, Richard Simmons, and Bob Saget for one of the '90s best and brightest comedies. Before The Sopranos and Sex and the City, this was HBO's must-hook-up series. The 13 episodes (on three discs) that comprise the first season brilliantly set the stage for what was the funniest and savviest show business comedy since The Dick Van Dyke Show (but with way, way more of an edge). Go backstage and meet the people who toil on "The Larry Sanders Show," the quintessential late-night talk show. Series creator Garry Shandling's Larry is so self-centered and neurotic, he makes Alan Brady look like Mister Rogers. Emmy winner Rip Torn is Artie, Larry's "always ready to jump in" pit bull of a producer, with Jeffrey Tambor as sidekick Hank Kingsley, former cruise director and "poor deluded bastard." The flawless ensemble also includes Penny Johnson as Larry's indispensable secretary Beverly, Janeane Garofalo at her deadpan best as talent booker Paula, and Jeremy Piven as cocksure head writer Jerry. With its unflinching portrayals of ego clashes, petty jealousies, and office politics and paranoia, this hyper-realistic series produced more hilariously awkward and squirm-inducing moments than The King of Comedy. But the boundless pleasures of The Larry Sanders Show make each episode ripe for repeat viewings (in which you can catch and savor the nuances of the performances or the throw-away brilliance of the dialogue). Adding to the fun and verisimilitude are the celebrity guest stars who tweak their personas. There's a less-than-gracious Burnett in the episode "Spiders," a duplicitous Carvey in "The Guest Host," and an insecure Williams in "Hank's Contract." The first disc contains an interview of Shandling conducted by Pulitzer Prize-winning television critic Tom Shales. No flipping, lest you miss the great "Rip Torn story" on how the formidable actor was cast. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars 2nd best of the 90s sitcoms behind Seinfeld?   October 27, 2008
I've only watched the first season, but i think that's a valid question/statement.

I hate HBO for delaying the release of the following seasons! Unlike most reviewers here, i never got to watch this show back when it was on TV cause no-one showed it here in Cyprus and i guess i must have missed it in my 4 years in the UK. I need more of this, asap! Do not abandon Larry Sanders like you did with Dream On, HBO. Work out all your copyrights issues and make this happen.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest Show Ever   June 26, 2008
I will keep my review short...This show is absolutely GENIUS. When you are up in heaven and walk into God's living room, this is the show He'll be watching.

5 out of 5 stars Hugely Funny Behind the Camera Show : Outstanding Cast   February 18, 2008
I missed the Larry Sanders run since I did not have his specific cable channel but I had caught snippets so this is a great package to see all his first year's shows that features a marvelous cast with the great and under appreciated stand up comic Garry Shandling who in real life filled in for Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show, Rip Torn as the "balls to the wall", "get it done" director/producer and Jeffrey Tambor who plays the neurotic, suck up side kick who turns into a self centered demon if and when he has any power. Full of actual real life guest stars that have friendly to combative jousts with the insecure Sanders in front of and behind the camera. A colorful look at Hollywood, the pressures on televison shows that are slaves to ratings and the tenuous egos behind the lens. Since this was on cable, the language and some scenes are adult but that's part of the fun, the gloves are off and you see the characters as they really are, or are portrayed.

4 out of 5 stars Subtle adult comedy - a 'future classic'   February 17, 2008

The 'Larry Sanders Show', an adult satire and sitcom about a fictional TV tonight show is a gem. There are no belly laughs but lots of wry humour. The boxed set has excellent video reproduction values and, as an extra, an interview with Gary himself looking back on the show. This series is the classic television of our era and will be studied by future generations of audiovisual cultural historians. Beat them to it. Watch and enjoy today.

3 out of 5 stars Five Star Show -- Three Star DVD   January 17, 2008

Great TV show! 13 episodes isn't enough. Give me more!
DVD extras are given short shrift, here. There is a mock interview that is informative in some respects. Shandling mentions how the first episode produced was the last episode aired that season. Watching it as the last episode in the dvd set, it *feels* like a first episode.

All the episodes together make more sense to me when viewed in production sequence. Dunno why the makers of the dvd didn't lay it out that way. A dvd release isn't the same animal as a TV broadcast season that had an eye on ratings.

Here's the Season One production sequence, if you want it.
