Product Description
Bellydance Basics & Beyond is a 2 hr. 20 min. program designed to teach the fundamental movements of bellydance and encourage their practice in a wide range of dance combinations.Jenna's methodical presentation of bellydance basics begins with POSTURE the foundation on which dance movement is built. The BASIC ARMS section teaches you how to maintain and enhance a beautiful elongated body line through graceful positioning of the arms and hands.WARMUP includes select dance moves and dynamic stretches and is designed as a light total-body workout. The FOOTWORK section lays the foundation for traveling steps focusing on a number of patterns such as basic walk 2-step and triple step traveling and ways to change directions.ISOLATIONS of shoulders ribcage and hips are building blocks of bellydance movement. Jenna breaks down slides lifts drops arcs and sharp accents. Some of these elements are dance moves in their own right and others help to form compound moves.COMPOUND MOVES are the essential vocabulary of bellydance - circles undulations and figure 8s. Jenna's technique of building them from the smallest and most basic elements up ensures that they are performed with effortless grace. Next Jenna shows how to layer simple and compound moves on top of TRAVELING steps.PRACTICE COMBINATIONS offer five 5-minute practice sessions made from many exciting bellydance combinations. As you follow Jenna you can listen to the music together with her verbal cues or you can select the music-only option. This section offers a series of excellent technique drills and can be combined with the WARMUP for a fantastic 30-minute moderate workout. The last session contains stretches and can serve as a cooldown.System Requirements:Run Time: 90 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: HEALTH/FITNESS UPC: 188883000109 Manufacturer No: 30122

5 out of 5 stars Great teaching video   December 16, 2008
Overall I think this is a great product for beginners like myself and also those a little more advanced looking to build skills. I am currently taking a Belly Dance Class and this video was great for helping me practice and reinforce what I learned in class. I give this video an A+.

5 out of 5 stars A "beginner" DVD that doesn't treat you like an idiot!   December 15, 2008
I have bought several bellydance DVDs, but I have used this one to practice the most. (I also take a class once a week.) Once you have practiced the various moves and are comfortable with them, an ideal workout is to do the warmup + one or two of the practice combinations. After just a few days of doing that, I already felt like I was dancing more smoothly and confidently. Jenna is a great teacher with a calm, pleasant manner who doesn't talk down to her audience even as she is reassuring and flexible in her teaching. An excellent choice for bellydance novices.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bellydance Instruction Video I have seen!   December 1, 2008
I have only completed 40 minutes of the video so far, but I had to stop to write and say that I am thrilled with Jenna's instruction! Within 15 seconds of her teaching, I could see that I was going to learn the absolute breakdown of all of the bellydancing moves I learned in the past. Not only is the mirror perfectly placed so that you can align yourself with her moves, but the closer frontal view gives you a different perspective as well.

I have a collection of useless videos of other so-called bellydancing instructors who were too busy posing with cabaret outfits for the camera and repeatedly saying "good for you", without actually teaching a thing. Jenna dresses "down" during the basics, so as not to distract and speaks to you as if you are the only one in the class. Her constant verbal guidance throughout the exercises, including proper, rather than incorrect moves, helps to strengthen, not hurt the training body.

Only one thing...I wish she would have more music and breaks in her teaching segments to make it a little less dry. I would consider this minor, though, compared to the richness and quality of her lessons.

I would love to come to NYC to take a "live" lesson with Jenna!

5 out of 5 stars Good First Bellydance DVD   November 29, 2008
I wanted to add something different into my fitness routine and bellydance sounded interesting. I've only used this DVD a few times but so far so good. It's easy to follow and I like the studio setting. Since their doing the class in front of a mirror you get a full body view. I wasn't sure it was really going to have much benefit as a workout. It uses your body differently then other exercise or dance I've done and I do feel like I'm getting some benefits.

5 out of 5 stars a great dvd for beginners   November 25, 2008
I am beginner in bellydance and after having read all the reviews of practice DVDS, I have chosen this one.
I am very happy with this DVD as Jenna shows all the movement very well. We can see her knees and it is really important for a beginner. The posture also is really important.
A great DVD!
