Amazon.com Like Sex & the City, Living Single, and Friends, Girlfriends focuses on a group of best pals whose lives are forever intertwined, for better or for worse. On the first season of Girlfriends--which aired during 2000-2001--we are introduced to a comely group of women. There's Joan (Tracee Ellis Ross, daughter of Diana Ross), a sensible attorney who's unlucky in love; her sassy assistant Maya (Golden Brooks); Joan's happy-go-lucky roommate Lynn (Persia White); and their man-eating friend Toni (Jill Marie Jones). That the women are African American is incidental, because their stories are universal. The adore each other, but each is seeking love and validation, not that the two necessarily go hand in hand. While their escapades lead to many laughs, the writers include enough poignant moments that the show has some heart. Even when Toni goes on a date with Joan's ex--a major violation amongst any group of girlfriends--the women manage to work their issues out in a way that is realistic enough to be recognizable, but comedic enough that we laugh at their antics. The four-disc set includes all 22 episodes from its debut season, including "Never a Bridesmaid," in which Joan and Maya collaborate to coordinate a wedding together. Executive produced by Kelsey Grammer (Frasier, Cheers), the sitcom is smart and well cast. There is genuine chemistry between the four leads, and Reggie Hayes has wonderful comic timing as their much-put upon best male friend William. Ross, who shares her mother's fine-boned beauty, proves to be deceptively good with physical comedy. That she is gorgeous is lost on Joan, who in real life would be working her looks to her utmost advantage. More than just girlfriends, Joan, Maya, Lynn, and Toni are great friends. --Jae-Ha Kim

Girlfriends DVD's have FINALLY made a debut! September 7, 2008 This is nothing to take lightly, the Girlfriends DVD's are finally here for all who adore them (including myself) FOREVER!. I must say that I have never been so happy recieving a DVD collection of a show so much before than I was with Girlfriends. The DVD contains all of the actual episodes from Season 1, and when I say ACTUAL EPISODES, what I mean is that there isn't any editing, cut scenes, or anything that would take away from the raw essence of the episodes from Season 1, you gotta love that!. OmG, can we say yum about Joan's Season 1 boyfriend Shawn?!. Joan and Toni are a reflection of myself and my homegirl. We both adore the show and sometimes have ourselves a Girlfriends up-all-night get together with popcorn, wine, and all the fixings you need for a Girlfriends extravaganza!. Maya keeps you laughing constantly with her wild instincts ''Black Detective''--LOL. Finally Lynn...well...Lynn she be going through some things! There is such a multi array of African American women in this show and it was a winner from the start from the very begining straight up to it's departure. All in all, through and through, up and down, Girlfriends, for me will always remain one of my all time favorite African American television shows. I am simply thankful that almost every Season has finally converted to DVD and I will now own every last season created!
Girlfriends, Afro-American "Friends" June 25, 2008 Girlfriends - The Complete First SeasonThis is one of UPN networks newer shows that is witty, funny and full of characters. From the staunch character played by Ms Tracee Ellis Ross to the modern day free spirit Persia White. Affluent African Americans portrayed as never before in a natural and real-life setting. I applaud producer Kelsey Grammer of Cheers, and Frasier fame for a good script, well developed characters and just enough modern day problems and situations to make this show worth taking a look at. The actresses and actors are well known within the African American community and accomplished in their own right. Basically you have a sitcom that follows traditional lines but with a hint of Ebonics thrown in to be enjoyable to all. The women are beautiful and strong American women and the fine portrayal of an affluent African American man by actors such as Reggie Hayes is a welcome treat for viewers like myself who are so tired of seeing African Americans portrayed as pimps and hookers. Great work from a great cast and again good stuff Mr Grammer, one of the funniest men on TV today.
Patiently awaited March 6, 2008 I was very anxious for the release of the Girlfriend series on dvd and finally. I'm glad I added this to my collection of dvd's. I can't wait to purchase the subsequent seasons......
